i have big melons

if there is some dirt somewhere in or around the house, my momma would like to plant food. yes. something that will eventually be edible to us. do all older asian folks do this? even though she doesn't live in this wee house of mine, she does come by every weekend to play with charlie and to do some gardening work.

not too long ago, she planted a few winter melon sprouts. they grew pretty quick and started tangling themselves around the apple tree and out towards the driveway. my dad used some leftover wooden planks that used to be the fence and made a trellis for it.

did you know there are male and female parts to this plant? if you don't have both, then a melon won't develop. interesting. for a while, we thought we weren't going to get anything, but the flowers were pretty. they also attracted a lot of flies though!

then voila!! my mom found a few teenie melons and boy was she excited!!! they started growing and growing and now, i have two huge winter melon effers in my yard. they are about the size of a basketball.

the first one. how cute that she stuck a round cutting board underneath it. looks like it's been put on a pedestal or something.

here's the 2nd one resting on a plank.

funny thing is that i don't even like eating winter melons. these things are usually cooked in chicken stock and made as a soup. guess who'll be eating a lot of soup :(
